It may seem I’m from the sticks
I’m from the city
Yes I know I’m contradictory
There are many cowboys in the city
We park our horses out in the country
Where we ride ride ride ride the freedom trail
and try try try to keep the trail from going stale
It may seem I’m from the sticks
I’m from the city
Yes I know I’m Countridictory
It may seem I’m fancy pants
My heart is country
You can find me on the freedom trail
Out in the brush or strolling along Broadway
My cowboy boots are walking fancy free
See me stride stride stride stride the freedom trail
And try try try to keep the trail from going stale
It may seem I’m fancy pants
My heart is country
You can find me on the freedom trail
When I see a handsome cab I just get mad
No siree
No sera
When I see them Broadway lights
Shinning in a horse’s eyes
I want to jump on up and set that dogie free
to ride ride ride ride the freedom trail
and try try try to keep the trail from going stale
It may seem I’m from the sticks
I’m from the city
You’ll find me wherever freedom trails

Behind The Song...
Freedom Trails
During COVID I was playing a weekly, all original song gig at the Cambridge House Brew Pub in Granby, CT with Joe O'Brien and Evan Kalish. Joe and I would go back and forth playing our original songs because there was a bit of an "issue" with the performing rights agencies. Several weeks into this run, we asked Rick Handville to join us on guitar. On one of the night Rick finger picked the verse of this song and I started singing the first verse of off the top of my head. I then threatened to finish the song and did soon after. It is always sad for me to see horses in New York City so I guess you can say this is a proper protest song.
